DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM:

Molecular informatics involves the integration of two fields, which are Chemiformatics and Bioinformatics. The interaction between drug molecules and proteins in the human body is important in pharmacy - it allows the understanding of drugs, in particular how they produce both therapeutic and side effects. Therefore, this information allows pharmacist to give better advice to the patient. In addition, this information is also important in the discovery of new drugs. Technologies and initiatives such as combinatorial chemistry and Genome Wide Association Studies have generated a lot of data. In the chemical space, the amount of data is estimated at 1088 and in the biological space, the amount of data is estimated to be in the petabytes (1015). Data analysis in the chemical space is important to find new drug molecules and in the biological space, it is important to confirm the protein molecules involved in the pathophysiology of a disease. Given the large amount of data in both spaces, both Cheminformatics and Bioinformatics are needed to analyze large amounts of data systematically. Both Cheminformatics and Bioinformatics involve disciplines including chemistry, biology and computer science such as programming and data analysis.

In this program, students will be taught relevant courses such as Cheminformatics, Bioinformatics, Data Mining and Analytics. Students in this course will also undergo industrial training where they will gain real life experience in tackling drug discovery related problems. During the industrial training, students will work on a research project that will contribute to their final dissertation. This program is expected to produce skilled graduates that will be valuable in diverse areas of healthcare such as pharmaceutical and clinical research, and biotechnology.
