Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy is the technique which takes advantage of the magnetic properties of certain nuclei. In principal, all the atoms which possess the property of "Spin" experience this phenomenon. Many nuclei can be studied by NMR techniques, but hydrogen (1H) and carbon (13C) are most commonly available. NMR gives information about the number of magnetically distinct atoms of the type being studied. When an NMR active nucleus is placed in a magnetic field, it absorbs energy at a frequency characteristic of the isotope. The intensity of the signal, absorption of the energy and the resonant frequency is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. For example in a 11.74 Tesla magnetic field, proton (1H) resonates at 500.13 MHz. NMR Spectroscopy is a non-destructive tool through which good data can be obtained from samples weighing less than a milligram. NMR spectroscopy is routinely used by chemists to study the chemical structure using simple one-dimensional (1D) techniques. Two-dimensional (2D) techniques are used to determine the structure of more complicated molecules. The development of NMR spectrometer has very important contributions in Chemistry, Physics, Medicine and many other disciplines. The use of NMR Spectroscopy has grown up distinctly and recent developments in NMR applications and software give us greater flexibility to work on the structure and activity of different molecules.

The NMR spectroscopy facility at Faculty of Pharmacy, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Puncak Alam Campus provides access to state-of-the-art NMR facility which includes Bruker AVANCE-500 MHz NMR spectrometer with 5 mm BBO probe and microcoil-based CapNMR probe. The microcoil-based CapNMR detection probe provides exceptionally high data quality and requires minimal user intervention. The spectrometer is running round the clock and helping in the study of the structure and function of organic molecules. The Faculty also offers extensive training in basic and advanced NMR experiments to users.

Short Courses & Training

The NMR facility of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Puncak Alam Campus offers short courses and trainings at beginner level and is intended to serve chemists working in the research institutes as well as in R&D departments of pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries in the following areas to scholars and industry professional on concessional rates.
