Assoc. Prof. Dr Kalavathy Ramasamy and team had isolated a unique probiotic lactic acid bacterial (LAB) strain, Lactobacillus plantarum LAB12, with excellent cholesterol assimilation properties in vitro. Instead of using conventional methods of quantification, they had demonstrated for the first time that both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of cholesterol assimilation by probiotics could be effectively performed by confocal microscopy. Their effort was made possible by a sterol-binding fluorescent probe that allowed exogenous cholesterol to be fluorescently tagged.  Assimilation of cholesterol that fluoresce by LAB12 could then be visualised through a confocal microscope.  For more details, please read https://doi.org/10.1007/s00216-018-1544-2
