Apart from teaching and research, community service is one of the responsibilities of a higher education institution. This indirectly fosters a community setting that encourages love, happiness, and mutual respect. With the approval from the Selangor State Education Department, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Puncak Alam Campus, Selangor has taken the initiative to launch the "Pelajar Angkat Sekolah Kebangsaan Puncak Alam (2)" project in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time of this global coronavirus outbreak, movement and social activities are restricted.
We aimed to financially assist the pupils in the B40 category (the bottom 40% lower-income group) who were disproportionately affected by the pandemic. According to a report released by the United Nations agencies UNFPA and UNICEF, urban low-income families are significantly more likely to be unemployed, to have decreased working hours, and to have obstacles in gaining access to home-based education. Through this scheme, the UiTM Faculty of Pharmacy faculty members deposited a monthly allowance into the bank accounts of selected students. Teachers aided in the identification of eligible students based on family income. Between July and December 2021, a total of twenty-four pupils benefitted under this programme. It is anticipated that this financial assistance will aid these students' education for a better future. The faculty management extends their gratitude to individuals who volunteered in this programme, and it is hoped that it will continue to receive support in the coming years.
